Fall is the perfect time to declutter your home. You’re able to eliminate clutter, old items, and other things that accumulate during the busy summer months and transition your home into a cozy haven for winter. Here are five things that you can declutter from your house this fall.
Clothes and shoes. Last week, we wrote about curating your closet for fall. We encouraged you to get rid of items that don’t fit and don’t make you happy. If you haven’t already, be sure to go through your closet and at least make a quick sweep of items that you don’t want to carry into a new season.
Kids’ toys and clothes. Kids’ clothing and toys seem to multiply by themselves! Set a timer and ask your kids to separate toys they play with all the time and any they haven’t played with in 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. Then have them pick 3, 6, and 12 things from the respective pile to donate. Bonus points if they pick more! While they do that, go through their closet and remove all clothing and shoes that are too small for them.
The hall closet. Now is the time to sort through the hall closet in preparation for cold weather. When you need to pull out gloves unexpectedly, you’ll be ready! Remove anything without a mate and anything you don’t wear or your kids have outgrown. Put things away that should be stored elsewhere. Then sort items into bins, baskets, or hanging organizers by type and/or family member.
The pantry. With the holidays coming up, you’ll want to be able to quickly and easily pull together meals; the best way to do so is to have your pantry in order. As with any highly-used space, things you reach for all the time end up towards the front and forgotten spices and other food languishes towards the back of the shelf. Remove anything that has expired, make a meal plan to use items that are close to expiring, and note items that you have to replace. Donate foodstuffs that are still good to eat, but your family won’t use.
Makeup and skincare. When you think holidays, you may not think about makeup, but decluttering your stash is a great way to save time when you’re getting ready for a party or even a normal work day. You won’t have to hunt through a large pile. Toss anything that has expired or doesn’t smell the same as when you opened it. If you don’t use certain items that are within their expiration date, but you feel bad throwing them away, see if a friend could use anything.
Declutter your home now to prepare for colder weather! It will make for a relaxing and cozy transition into fall and the colder months.
